The Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) will participate in the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2025, scheduled to take place from 27th to 30th April 2025 at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) in Arusha, Tanzania.
The event will bring together journalists, media stakeholders, policy makers, legal practitioners, development partners, and human rights defenders to engage in dialogue and reflection on the state of media freedom in Tanzania and globally, with a special focus on the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence (AI) in the media space.
As part of the commemorations, LHRC, in collaboration with the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) and the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF), will host a side event on 28th April 2025 from 14:00 to 15:30 under the topic: “Legal and Regulatory Framework & Role of the Parliament in Media Freedom.”
This session will provide a platform to discuss the current legal and policy environment governing media freedom in Tanzania, assess the effectiveness of existing frameworks, and examine the role of Parliament in safeguarding press freedom and upholding democratic principles.
In addition to this engagement, LHRC will offer free legal aid services at AICC from 28th to 29th April 2025. These services are part of the Centre’s broader mandate to promote access to justice and protect the rights of all individuals.
The commemorative activities will also include keynote addresses, panel discussions, expert roundtables, workshops, and public forums that explore the future of journalism in the digital era, media sustainability, journalists' safety, and the influence of AI on press freedom.
We encourage all stakeholders and members of the public to take part in this important commemoration and contribute to the collective efforts to advance freedom of expression and a free, independent, and pluralistic media environment in Tanzania.
