Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) is excited to officially launch the celebrations for International Human Rights Day, set to be commemorated on December 10, 2024. This globally recognized day marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. The UDHR outlines 30 fundamental rights, emphasizing the dignity and equality of all individuals, regardless of race, gender, language, religion, or other status.

Many of the principles enshrined in the UDHR have become part of international law through subsequent covenants, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (1966) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (1976). These principles are also embedded in the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, particularly in its provisions on fundamental rights and duties.

Each year, International Human Rights Day is celebrated with a specific theme that addresses current challenges in human rights. For 2024, the theme is "Equality: Reducing Inequalities and Advancing Human Rights." This theme aligns with the discussions held at the Summit of the Future 2024, a UN-led initiative that sought to strengthen global efforts to protect and promote human rights in response to emerging challenges.

In Tanzania, this year's commemoration takes place against the backdrop of rising human rights violations, including threats, abductions, and the enforcement of laws that stifle freedom of expression. LHRC remains committed to promoting peace, security, and the protection of human rights, calling on the state and stakeholders to take decisive action to restore rights and freedoms.

As part of the 2024 celebrations, LHRC will conclude its six-year strategic plan (2019–2024) and launch its new plan for 2025–2030. To mark this occasion, LHRC has organized a series of activities to promote human rights and address inequalities in the country, art competitions for students, legal aid services for women, legal awareness through social media, short film on lhrc's achievements, and launch of lhrc's 2025–2030 strategic plan.
