LHRC, The Advocates for Human Rights Submit UPR Report on Gender-Based Violence in Tanzania
On 10th April 2026 Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC), in collaboration with The Advocates for Human Rights (AHR), has submitted a stakeholder report to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) ahead of the 53rd session of the Working Group scheduled for November 2026.
The report highlights ongoing human rights concerns affecting women and girls in Tanzania, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child and forced marriage, obstetric violence, barriers to education for pregnant girls and adolescent mothers, and the growing challenge of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV).
The submission assesses Tanzania’s implementation of recommendations accepted during the previous UPR cycle and calls for stronger legal protections, improved enforcement mechanisms, increased accountability, and survivor-centred approaches in addressing gender-based violence.
The report also raises concern over the increasing number of online abuse cases targeting women and girls, while emphasising the need for stronger digital safety measures and reforms to existing cyber laws.
LHRC and AHR further call on the Government of Tanzania to strengthen maternal healthcare services, improve access to education for adolescent mothers, eliminate harmful practices affecting women and girls, and expand awareness and protection programmes within communities.
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a United Nations Human Rights Council mechanism that reviews the human rights records of all UN Member States every four and a half years.
