Today, 10 December 2025, the world commemorates International Human Rights Day. On this special Day, Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) has issued a press statement reflecting the state of human rights in Tanzania in 2025, particularly before, during, and after the General Elections.

The statement highlights serious human rights challenges, particularly before, during, and after the 2025 General Elections, including:

1. Arrests of individuals with dissenting opinions, including opposition leaders and human rights defenders.

2. Cases of abductions and enforced disappearances.

3. Killings of civilians allegedly linked to excessive use of force by state agents.

4. Prosecution of government critics on various charges, including treason.

5. Suppression of freedom of expression and media freedom, including harassment of journalists and closure of media outlets.

6. Internet shutdowns and restrictions on access to information. 7. Violations of freedom of worship and threats to religious harmony.

OUR CALL TO THE GOVERNMENT:

LHRC calls upon the Government to urgently respect, protect, and promote human rights; ensure accountabilities for all violations; safeguard freedom of expression, media freedom, and freedom of worship; and guarantee the dignity, safety, and rights of all people in Tanzania.
