LHRC and Anti-FGM Network are joining forces to combat FGM and child exploitation in the Mara region.
On June 3, 2024, the Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC), in collaboration with the Network of Organizations Against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Tanzania, met with the Mpakani community in the Tarime District, Mara Region, to discuss ongoing FGM issues in the region.
The villagers of Mpakani received education on opposing the brutality of FGM against girls. They were encouraged to unite as a community and strongly condemn FGM practices by cooperating with authorities, including providing information and evidence to facilitate the fight against FGM and gender-based violence in general.
Additionally, they discussed opposing cross-border child trafficking for labor exploitation, child marriages, and violence and sexual abuse against children.
The community suggested that more efforts should be directed towards traditional elders who perform FGM to combat the cruelty against girls.
Also, as a network member of the Tanzania Network to End FGM, LHRC participated in the annual general meeting and community mobilization against FGM in the region.
