Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) and the Finish Embassy in Tanzania have signed a grant agreement worth of 1.5 million euros aimed at supporting the LHRC's cause in strengthening the promotion of human rights and improving electoral process to be more transparent, fair and inclusive. The signing event took place on Friday, July 12, 2019, at the Embassy’s office in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking at the grant signing event, the Executive Director of LHRC, Ms. Anna Henga thanked the Embassy of Finland for continuing to trust LHRC having cooperated with LHRC earlier in 2016 to 2017 in the project to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation.

“On behalf of the LHRC and Tanzanians who are beneficiaries of our work, I would like to sincerely thank you for this support. This support will help us double up our efforts in contributing to good governance, accountability and inclusive democratic processes in the country,” said Anna Henga.

On the other hand, the Finish Embassy commended the good work done by LHRC and asserted that this support is aimed at contributing to the LHRC’s good cause.

“Legal and Human Rights Centre has a strong competence in human rights and electoral observation work. It has defended and promoted human rights and good governance since 1995. With this project, we want to contribute to support the culture of free and fair elections, and strengthen citizens’ awareness and active participation, ” said Kari Leppänen, Counsellor at the Finish Embassy.

The support focuses on electoral monitoring and observation and strengthening of human rights and civil society participation covering both the local elections 2019 and the general election 2020.
