In a bid to prepare for the UPR Stakeholders' Report for the 3rd Cycle as a collective move, Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) teamed up with other two (2) organizations namely, Tanzania Human Rights Defenders Coalition (THRDC) and Save the Children to coordinate about 150 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from nine (9) thematic areas across the country to participate in the process through series of advocacy activities. On 25th March 2021 LHRC successfully submitted the UPR Stakeholders' Report to the UN Human Rights Council on behalf of 150 organizations across the country working in various thematic areas, namely; Women Rights, Children Rights, People with Disability Rights, General Human Rights, Social Rights, Land and Economic Rights, Refugees Rights, Elderly Rights and Civil Society and Human Rights Defenders.
The acronym UPR stands for Universal Periodic Review which is a process involving 193 United Nations member states to provide feedback and updates on the status of human rights and the actions they have taken to improve the situation of Human Rights in their countries. The process is undertaken after every four years since 2006 upon a resolution made no 60/251 by the United Nations General assembly.
This process involves providing updates, sharing best practices, challenges, and lessons for learning and adaptation. Tanzania is a member state of the United Nations, it submitted its 1st report in October 2011 during the 12th session. The 2nd report was submitted by the government in 2016. The UPR is coordinated by the Human Rights Council which is under the United Nations General assembly.
The United Republic of Tanzania expects to be reviewed in the 3rd Cycle in December 2021 before the Human Rights Council, Civil Societies have a considerable role to help the Council by submitting its contribution through joint or individual report on the human rights situation especially the implementation of recommendations issued during the last review in the 2nd Cycle.
