LHRC will join the international community to commemorate the International Albinism Awareness Day which is marked on June 13 each year. Following the COVID-19 outbreak, LHRC will conduct virtual commemoration on Thursday, June 11, 2020, in which H.E Amb Dr. Abdallah Possi, the Ambassador of Tanzania to Germany is expected to be a guest of honour.
LHRC commemorates the day as part of the protection and promotion of the rights of people with albinism in particular and human rights in general. The national theme for 2020 commemoration is “Haki sawa kwa wote; Boresha Afya, Elimu na Ajira kwa watu wenye ualbino”. The theme calls for the equality and improved access to social services and wellbeing of People with Albinism.
In Tanzania, people with albinism are still targeted for their body parts as to bring good fortune and wealth while on the other hand people with albinism face stigma, prejudice and discrimination because of misconceptions and superstitious beliefs. International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) aims at celebrating the rights of persons with albinism worldwide.
