Corporate and Environment watch
The Legal and Human Rights Centre realises the importance of following up government control and regulations in private and corporate institutions to guarantee the adherence to labour, land, environment and tax compliance. This unit falls under Outcome 4 of the LHRC operation plan.
Together with the work that the unit does it also prepares each year the corporate and business report. This report is the assessment how corporations adhere to the rights stated above. This report is meant to act as an advocacy tool to government and its regulating institution to monitor corporations in the implementation of the laws and the adherence to set procedures for the protection of employees and staff, communities that surround them and the nation at large. It is also meant to encourage corporations to respect national regional and international standards on human rights and business.
Together with that the unit also addresses issues of corruption and transparency as two components of good governance calling on accountability of both local and central government. To achieve that at local government level the LHRC through this unit trains councillors in selected districts.
