The US president Barack Obama who is concluding his presidential term this year has today 4th of July, 2016 applauded the efforts being done in general by the activists in raising awareness to the people and particularly mentioning the LHRC’s Geline Fuko for championing the establishment of the first Constitutional Database in Tanzania by the Legal and Human Rights Centre.
While addressing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders 2016’s presidential summit workshop President Obama admirably said ‘’America is going to keep standing with activists like Geline Fuko of Tanzania. Geline is a lawyer and human rights activist. A few years ago, she thought people in Tanzania should be able to use their mobile phones to read their constitution, so she went out and designed Tanzania’s first database of constitutional resources, opening up her government to more of her people so they could understand their law and their rights and their responsibilities. So thank you so much, Geline, for the great work ‘’
The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). President Obama launched YALI to support young Africans as they spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa. The Mandela Washington Fellowship brings young leaders to the United States for academic coursework and leadership training and creates unique opportunities in Africa for Fellows to put new skills to practical use in leading organizations, communities, and countries.
Geline works as a researcher at Legal and Human-Rights Center (LHRC). She was a team leader who pioneered an establishment and running of Tanzania's first and only online public database and information center on constitutional resources. The LHRC established its Constitutional Data base one year ago which was launched on July 15, 2015. The data base, one of the kinds is a unique resource centre where one can view Constitutions of all nations in the world through the database website (http://katiba.humanrights.or.tz/) and mobile phone.
